Hence, a new shrine for the Roman Catholics was built amidst the Wanni forests in the early 17th century. Even after the Dutch colonial period, the Roman Catholic community of Sri Lanka remained to be a small group of over 50000 people. Nevertheless, the Madhu church gained a lot of reputation from the whole nation over time. Pilgrims from all over the country started visiting the Madhu church. Bishop Bonjean brought about the new building of the church in 1872.
